I got genuinely fed up with not knowing which platform was actually better, so I spent about six months booking experiences on both GetYourGuide and Viator β€” sometimes the exact same tour from both β€” to see what actually happened. Real money, real experiences, real problems deliberately caused to test customer service. Here’s everything I found.

The Price Comparison (40 tours, same routes)

I compared identical tours in Rome, Tokyo, New York and Bangkok. GetYourGuide was cheaper in 24 of my 40 comparisons. Usually 8-12% less, but on premium experiences the gap sometimes hit 18%. Viator has a “best price guarantee” which sounds great until you actually try to claim it and discover the process is genuinely cumbersome.

The Cancellation Policy Drama

This is where it gets interesting. GetYourGuide shows free cancellation up to 24 hours before on most listings β€” and that’s what you actually get. On Viator, I found multiple cases where “free cancellation” was technically available but the cutoff buried in the small print was 7 days, not 24 hours. This is the biggest practical difference between the two platforms.

The App Experience

GetYourGuide’s app is cleaner. Better filtering, more reliable checkout, doesn’t boot you to a browser mid-booking. Viator has improved but I still had two instances where the booking flow broke and I had to start over.

Selection β€” the One Area Viator Wins

Viator is bigger. More listings, more niche operators in places that aren’t major tourist destinations. If you’re heading somewhere genuinely off the beaten path, check Viator first. For the top 50 global destinations though, GetYourGuide surfaces better options.

Customer Service: The Real Test

I deliberately created three problems on each platform. GetYourGuide resolved all three via live chat in under 2 hours. Two were solved in under 45 minutes. Viator needed 24-48 hours for all three, and one required an actual phone call.

My verdict after 40+ bookings: GetYourGuide wins on price, cancellation clarity, app quality and customer service. Use it as your default. Only go to Viator when you’re hunting for a very specific operator in a niche destination that isn’t on GYG yet.
