Five things under Β£100 each that I’ve actually kept using and that genuinely improved day-to-day life.

Modern home interior living room

1. One Really Good Chef’s Knife (Β£35-80)

Not a knife block. One quality 8-inch chef’s knife that’s properly sharp. The Victorinox Fibrox (Β£35) is what professional kitchens actually use. Cooking becomes faster and more enjoyable almost immediately.

2. Blackout Curtain Liners or a Sleep Mask (Β£8-25)

Sleep quality is one of the highest-leverage things you can improve. IKEA blackout curtain liners are about Β£8 per panel. I slept measurably better within a week.

3. A Properly Designed Dish Rack (Β£25-50)

An over-sink dish rack that drains back into the sink reclaims counter space. It sounds ridiculous. It made the list.

4. Smart Plugs (Β£10-15 each)

Turn any lamp into something you can control via phone or set on a schedule. Three plugs: Β£35 total, 10 minutes setup.

5. A Good Doormat (Β£20-40)

A proper coir doormat catches dirt before it gets inside. You’ll vacuum less. Your floors stay cleaner. It’s Β£25. Get one.

The theme: The most impactful home upgrades are almost always the most boring-sounding ones. Sharp knife, dark room, functional organisation.
